Ahead of Ultravasan, Trailvasan, Vasastafetten and Vasakvartetten 2022

This weekend, the time will come for runners to enter the Vasaloppet Arena again as the Vasaloppet Summer Week 2022 concludes with a total of six different running races. More than 6,400 runners, both elite and recreational athletes, from 32 countries will participate in the individual races and relays. Many of the individual runners also hope to complete this year's Vasaloppstrippeln. Here are some facts, favourites, statistics and trivia ahead of the races.

You can still register at vasaloppet.se up until Thursday, August 18. Direct registration (with a slightly higher registration fee) opens on Friday, August 19 at 10:00 at the race office in Mora and at 12:00 at the race office in Sälen. On the day of the race, direct registration can be made at the start points.
OPENING HOURS >

There are six different running races and a total of 13 classes: Everything start on Friday evening at 18:00 with the new race Trailvasan 10, a 10 km exercise race starting and finishing at the Vasaloppet finish line in Mora.

Saturday
On Saturday, August 20, Ultravasan 90, Ultravasan 45 and Trailvasan 30 will follow, as well as Vasakvartetten and the 30th-anniversary Vasastafetten. In total, there are twelve classes (ten of which are competition classes) running on Saturday:

Three individual races:
– Ultravasan 90. 90 km. Start in Sälen at 05:00.
Ultravasan 90 km starts, like the traditional Vasaloppet, in Sälen and follows the course east towards Mora. Two classes: Women and Men.
– Ultravasan 45. 45 km. Start in Oxberg at 09:00.
Ultravasan 45 km starts in Oxberg and largely follows Vasaloppet 45’s winter route along the Oxberg lake to Vasslan before joining the Ultravasan 90 course. Two classes: Women and Men.
– Trailvasan 30. 30 km. Start in Oxberg at 11:00.
Trailvasan 30 starts in Oxberg and runs on forest roads and paths, through summer pastures and spruce forests via the checkpoints in Oxberg, Hökberg and Eldris to Mora. Two classes: Women and Men.

The two relay races:
– Vasakvartetten. Running relay for four-person teams. Start in Sälen at 07:00.
90 km from Sälen to Mora divided into four sections of 23.5, 23.2, 24.2 and 19.1 km. (Vasakvartetten has three classes: Women, Men and Leisure. Participants in the Women and Men classes compete for prize money. Men = Women are allowed. Women = Only women. Leisure = Any mix of women and men allowed. In the Leisure class a single participant may run several sections.)

– Vasastafetten. Running relay for ten-person teams. Start in Sälen at 09:00.
90 km from Sälen to Mora divided into sections 4.5–15 km. (Vasastafetten has three classes: Women, Men and Leisure. Participants in the Women and Men classes compete for prize money. Men = Women are allowed. Women = Only women. Leisure = Any mix of women and men allowed. In the Leisure class a single participant may run several sections.)

Ultra is the name of races longer than the marathon distance of 42,195 metres, and ”trail” or ”terrain” means that the main part of the race is not on asphalt. Ultravasan 90, Vasakvartetten and Vasastafetten run on the following surfaces: 60 km forest road/Vasaloppet track, 6 km gravel, 18 km paths and 6 km asphalt. The course elevation is 867 metres.
More information on sections and surfaces >

In addition to the above races, the children’s running race ”Barnens Vasalopp löpning” runs on Friday, August 19 in both Sälen and Mora for those aged up to about 10. A fun and challenging course where children get to experience both movement and joy.

Ultravasan 90, participants to keep an eye on 2022
Here are some interesting profiles to bear in mind for Saturday:

Men:
Joacim Lantz, 31 years old, is a favourite to win. He was fourth in 2018 and second in 2019. Nevertheless, he is still perceived as ”young” and ”little brother” in the ”Ockelbo mafia” – which consists of 2017 Ultravasan winner Elov Olsson (who will run the 100 km World Championship instead) and older brother Johan Lantz – both of whom have more prestigious placements to their name, compared to Joacim. Joacim may yet be the fastest of them, but he has been hampered by injuries in recent years, so it will be interesting to see where he lands.

Vajin Armstrong from New Zealand looks set to be the foreign competition. He has fine placements from many international races over the years.

Fredrik Eriksson has the speed and is probably looking for a rematch after his seventh place in 2021. He has previously won Ultravasan 45 (2019).

Viktor Stenqvist had perhaps his greatest running achievement in 2021 when he came second in Ultravasan 90.

Many other runners may have very high capacity, but have not yet been able to push to their limit in similar contexts.

37-year-old Eliud Inyen from Kenya is hard to judge, but he certainly has one of the best marathon personal records in the starting field with 2.21.34 from Nairobi 2019. Incidentally, he will be the first ever Kenyan runner in Ultravasan.

Of course, there are additional interesting names on the start list…

Former NHL pro Daniel Sedin is another interesting starter. He has been given start number 22, corresponding to the number on his hockey jersey, which is hoisted to the top of the arena back home in Vancouver. And speaking of hockey: Fredrik Eriksson has also played hockey and is the son of hockey legend Roland Eriksson.

Women:
On the women’s side, last year’s runner-up Dominika Stelmach was registered but has chosen to run the ultrarunning race Comrades in South Africa on August 28. Due to the pandemic, that race has been moved from June to August this year. We hope that Dominika might return to Dalarna next year.

So with the big favourite out of the running, some Swedish women will most likely duke it out for the top spot. They are aged 43–54; Kajsa Berg, Camilla Berggren, Petra Klevmar, Lina Karlsson and Sofia Holmgård.

We will see what that experience might do. Three-time European 100 km champion Kajsa Berg has made an interesting comeback this year – after a few years’ break – and won the 80 km EcoTrail in Stockholm in June. Kajsa has been looking forward to running Ultravasan for many years, and the time has now come. Will she run straight to victory?

Other runners in the women’s class to keep an eye on: Malin Barrulf, who came third last year, Frida Södermark, Ebba Sigfridsson, Maria Saxvall and Åsa Bäck.

Ultravasan 45
Some interesting profiles to bear in mind for Saturday:

Kristofer Låås will be starting in Oxberg to defend his men’s class victory from 2021. Can Marcus Nilsson, Roman Ryapolov or Oscar Bergström challenge him? Both last year’s winner Liselotte Hellsten and last year’s runner up Sophia Sundberg are registered; might we expect another duel in the women’s class?

Trailvasan 30
The big favourite in Trailvasan 30 is David Nilsson, Högby IF – former Swedish marathon record holder. David participated in the World Athletics Championships in Eugene in July, where he had to abort the marathon. He won Ultravasan 45 in 2018.
