At the first start at 08:00 it was 12 degrees Celsius, lightly overcast with a breeze at the Vasaloppet start in Sälen. Conditions were perfect. The course this year was 95 km, one kilometre shorter than last year, thanks to the cycling track now going straight at Risberg, just like the Vasaloppet ski track. 72 women and 350 men started in the competition classes.

Elite women

First to reach Vasaloppet’s highest point after about 3 km was Amanda Bohlin, who won Cykelvasan in 2023 and came fifth in 2024. She continued solo but by Smågan at 11 km she was joined by last year’s runner-up, Lejla Njemcevic from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The chasing group consisted of twelve cyclists but was already half a minute behind the two women, who kept working together at a high pace.

At the checkpoint in Mångsbodarna, Lejla took the sprint prize ahead of Amanda. The following group, led by Linn Gustafzzon, was one and a half minutes back.

In Risberg, Amanda narrowly won the sprint prize ahead of Lejla, who then took the mountain prize in Evertsberg. There was no doubt that one of the two would win the race; the chasing group was now almost five minutes behind.

At the Oxberg checkpoint, Lejla took the sprint prize, while Amanda was two seconds ahead in Hökberg with 19 km to go. The final sprint prize in Eldris went to Lejla. That made it an equal 4–4 in sprint prizes between the two – but who would take the victory?

Lejla Njemcevic was first onto the home stretch at the Zorn Museum, closely followed by Amanda Bohlin. With about 100 metres to go, Amanda launched an attack that Lejla could not match. Amanda won by one second, taking her second Cykelvasan victory in three years.

Winner Amanda Bohlin told SVT:
“I wanted a hard race from the start and I really got it. I went hard up the hill and hoped to bring one or two people with me, but I ended up quite alone. Then I saw Lejla behind me, so I waited for her, because I felt I wasn’t going to be able to pull this off alone. And I didn’t want the group to catch up with Lejla either. Then we had great cooperation. We agreed right away to help and push and cheer each other on. So I have a lot to thank her for today.”

“I didn’t feel stressed at all before the sprint, but very confident about what I was going to do. I was lucky that she pushed us those last four kilometres. If you start the sprint first here you have a very good chance of winning. She never did, so I went as hard as I could and hoped it would be enough. Everything clicked today; it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Lejla Njemcevic took her second straight second place in Cykelvasan:
“It was an interesting race, but unfortunately it wasn’t a first place, so that just means I have to come back here.”

Seventeen-year-old Elinore Nilsson, who recently won bronze at the Junior European Championships, won the group sprint and took third place:
“I’m really happy. I really wanted a podium place today, but I didn’t know if it would be possible. I’m so glad I managed it.”

Elite men

The 350 participants in the men’s class started one hour after the women, at 09:00.

The Norwegians had promised maximum pace from the start, and they delivered! Last year’s runner-up, Emil Hasund Eid, brought six cyclists with him up to the highest point, where Østen Brovold Midtsundstad, who came second and third these past two years, took the sprint prize after 9 minutes and 29 seconds (a minute faster than 2024). Soon it was a large group – or rather, a long line. But after five kilometres, Hugo Forsell broke away and pushed ahead.

At the Smågan checkpoint, a trio led by 13 seconds: Swedish road cycling champion Hugo Forsell, who took the sprint prize ahead of Norwegian mountain bike champion Eskil Evensen-Lie and Swedish mountain bike champion Matthias Wengelin. In last year’s Cykelvasan, this trio finished seventh, sixth, and fifth, respectively.

Hugo Forsell also won the sprint prize in Mångsbodarna. The two Swedes took turns leading with the Norwegian following. The main group was 46 seconds behind.

Heading into Risberg, Eskil Evensen-Lie moved into the lead and took the sprint prize four seconds ahead of the two Swedes. The group was now 38 seconds behind. After the Risberg checkpoint, Hugo Forsell caught up with the Norwegian, while Matthias Wengelin, who had a cold this past week, had to let the leading duo go.

Eskil Evensen-Lie took the hill prize in Evertsberg, two seconds ahead of Hugo Forsell, while the 24-man chasing group was still 34 seconds behind. Could they close the gap? Yes, after 67 km they were back, and now the race was wide open again.

Oscar Lind went on the attack up the Lundbäcksbackarna hills, and at the Oxberg checkpoint there were two Norwegians and two Swedes cycling together. The sprint prize went to Viktor Lindqvist ahead of Emil Hasund Eid, Oscar Lind, and Østen Brovold Midtsundstad.

Emil Hasund Eid was first in Hökberg, and the quartet now had a two-minute lead. Oscar Lind took the final sprint prize in Eldris.

At the Aukland bridge, Østen Brovold Midtsundstad moved into the lead and was the first to turn onto the home stretch. He launched the sprint immediately. Viktor Lindqvist tried to catch him but couldn’t close the gap and had to concede just before the finish line.

Twenty-one-year-old Østen Brovold Midtsundstad now has a third, a second, and a first place in the last three years at Cykelvasan. Not only that; he also set a new Cykelvasan record time of 2:35:59.

“I don’t know what to say. I felt good and told Emil Hasund Eid that I could go for the sprint. In the last kilometres I started getting serious cramps; there were a couple of times I almost had to let go. But I’m extremely happy to take this sprint.”

The Norwegians in Team Hunton Hardrocx, which Østen also cycles for, took five of the top seven places:
“We said it before today: victory or nothing! We went for the win today. I already had a second and a third place, so of course I wanted to win. But we said we’d go all in for whoever felt the best. And Emil said at the end, we’re riding for you, so I just had to save my strength. Without Emil, if I’d been alone, it wouldn’t have worked.”

The best-placed Swede was Viktor Lindqvist in second place. His best previous finish was tenth in 2021:
“He was a bit stronger than me in the sprint, so I’ll just have to accept being beaten.
