Here you will also find some famous memorials, statues and obelisks.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading vl-text-md\">Start house in S\u00e4len and Vasastenen<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-starthuset_salen_2018_1350x690-1062x543-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1634\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The start house in S\u00e4len<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The start house in S\u00e4len was inaugurated in 1995. There are Vasaloppet staff here all year round, and S\u00e4lens IF has its office here. There is also a small Vasaloppet exhibition for visitors.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">At the start house in S\u00e4len there is a large stone engraved with the names of all men\u2019s class winners since 1922. The monument is about 5.5 metres tall and about 5.5 tonne heavy; a pointed obelisk made of reddish granite from a quarry in Gesunda. The monument was made in 1923 in Oxberg and unveiled by the county governor on Midsummer\u2019s Day 1924 at the shore of the V\u00e4sterdal\u00e4lven river in S\u00e4len village. In 1961, the Vasaloppet start place moved to Berga by and in 1995, the obelisk moved to its current location at Vasaloppet\u2019s (at the time) new start house. In 2007, one side of the obelisk had filled up, and inscriptions from 2008 and on start on a new side of the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-obelisk_segrare_start_salen_2014-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1633\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The obelisk engraved with the names of all winners at the Vasaloppet start<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201dWhen the time came to carve the winner\u2019s name into the stone in S\u00e4len, they were dead set on only putting my name up there. I told them, if you don\u2019t get both names up there, I\u2019ll make sure that stone disappears.\u201d This was said by Per Erik Hedlund, officially named the Vasaloppet victor in 1928, despite the fact that him and Sven Utterstr\u00f6m had tried to share the victory. Both names are engraved on the stone!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"vl-text-md\"><strong>Vasastenen in S\u00e4len<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">In S\u00e4len there\u2019s a memorial stone at \u201dVasaholn\u201d by the old mountain road. The stone was erected in 1903 by villagers and patriots in memory of Gustav Eriksson who, according to legend, was caught up with there by Dalarna men. The inscription translates to: \u201dGustaf Eriksson Vasa 1521. If you wish to be our overlord, both old and young will follow\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">It took 10 horses to move the block of stone from the Limedsforsen railway station. People from villages all around left their homes to make that journey together. The bridge over the V\u00e4sterdal\u00e4lven river sagged under the weight of the stone. For the last 100 metres, the people of S\u00e4len had to pull the stone up the slope themselves, using a 100-metre rope. The monument was inaugurated with pomp and ceremony on September 18, 1904. Parking is available at Olnispag\u00e5rden and you can walk up a path to the memorial stone.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-vasastenen_VL-1923-1_1350x690-1062x543-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1632\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Erik Hansson (118), Studenternas IF Uppsala, at Vasastenen the day before Vasaloppet 1923<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading vl-text-md\">The finish line \u2013 \u201d In forefathers\u2019 tracks for future victories\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"\">Artist Anders Zorn\u2019s statue of Gustav Vasa was inaugurated in Mora in 1903. In fact, Anders Zorn sponsored ski competitions in Mora long before Vasaloppet came to be in 1922. When the first Vasaloppet ran, they chose to place the finish right there by the statue.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">A more permanent finish line was found for Vasaloppet and all other races during Vasaloppet\u2019s Winter Week and Summer Week, centrally located at Vasaloppet\u2019s House. The originator of the well-known motto is Gustaf Ankarcrona, an artist and preservationist from Leksand. The motto was added as early as the second race.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">Important years for the finish line portal<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1922: The text \u201dM\u00c5L\u201d (\u201dFinish\u201d) on a white-painted background in a wooden frame, suspended between two flagpoles. No other decoration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1923: The motto \u201cI f\u00e4drens sp\u00e5r f\u00f6r framtids segrar\u201d (\u201dIn the forefathers\u2019 tracks for future victories\u201d) was created by artist Gustaf Ankarcrona, Leksand. Painted on fabric for the 1923 Vasaloppet by artist Anders Otter, Morkarlby, and the flagpoles were framed with red wooden pillars. Pine garlands all around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1948: The spelling of the motto was updated to the modern \u201cI f\u00e4ders sp\u00e5r f\u00f6r framtids segrar\u201d. Painted by artist and conservator Evald H\u00e5kansson, Soller\u00f6n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1979: New paint with green pine garlands on the cloth, surrounding the text, by Evald H\u00e5kansson.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1986: In February, the finish line portal was made permanent, to stand all year round. The bathtub factory VVS Gustavsberg constructed it using enamel on steel. It turned into a big piece of enamel art! It could be considered two works of art, each eight eight metres wide and 1.5 metres tall, given that the portal looks the same from both directions. Each side consists of ten 80 x 150 centimetre plates. This was \u201dbathtub plate\u201d, primed and top enamelled at 820 degrees. The text was screen printed and burned into place. Antti Walin from the Gustavsberg factory hand-painted the pine garland and the text of the motto. Artist and enamel painter Hadar Tilja in Stockholm had developed a new method of painting enamel: With this method, he hand-painted the emblems with garlands, sheaves and crossed branches \u2013 using 19 different colours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The portal with the famous motto has become one of Mora\u2019s best-known brands and has travelled around the world in pictures and reports. In connection with the Swedish Sports Confederation\u2019s 100-year anniversary in 2003, \u201d100 sports environments\u201d in the country were honoured. The Vasaloppet finish line was one of these. 2003 uppm\u00e4rksammades \u201d100 av idrottens milj\u00f6er\u201d i landet. Vasaloppsm\u00e5let var en av dessa milj\u00f6er.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The new finish<br><\/strong>Due to the new infrastructure project \u201cGenomfart Mora\u201d, the final stretch was shortened by about 100 metres in 2021. A new, temporary finish line portal, identical to the permanent one, is now built up ahead of each event on level with the church belfry, right by the Vasagatan roundabout. The new final stretch is about 340 metres, counting from the turn at the Zorn museum to the new finish line.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">The total length of any race isn\u2019t significantly changed by this since course layouts are adjusted on an almost annual basis depending on ground conditions in the Vasaloppet Arena and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-malportal_v2022_1350x690-1062x543-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1631\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The church belfry and the temporary finish line portal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The original finish line portal, which became permanent in 1986, will stay in its current place and become part of a medal square.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Vasaloppet\u2019s House and Mora-Nisse\u2019s Square<\/strong><br>Vasaloppet\u2019s House in Mora was inaugurated in 1994 and it contains the IFK Mora office on the ground floor and Vasaloppet\u2019s office on the upper floor. In front of Vasaloppet\u2019s House you\u2019ll find Mora-Nisse\u2019s Square (inaugurated in 2007) with stones in red \u00c4lvdalen quartzite naming all the winners in Tjejvasan and Vasaloppet\u2019s women\u2019s class.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-mora-nisses_torg_v2022_02_1350x690-1062x543-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1630\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vasaloppet\u2019s permanent finish line with Mora-Nisse\u2019s House to the left, and Mora-Nisse\u2019s Square and Vasaloppet\u2019s House to the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Gustav Vasa statue<\/strong><br>Next to Vasaloppet\u2019s permanent finish line is Anders Zorn\u2019s statue of Gustav Vasa, erected on the hill where Gustav Vasa stood and spoke to the people in 1520. The statue reads, in the Moram\u00e5l dialect: \u201dJ\u00e4n Gustaf Eriksson T\u00e4led a morkarrum 1520 reited dalfolk m\u00f6rkja 1903. G\u00e4rdi Zornim.\u201d (\u201dHere, where Gustaf Eriksson spoke to the Mora men in 1520, the people of Dalarna erected this mark in 1903. Zorn\u2019s work.\u201d) The stone is a granite block from Kr\u00e5ng\u00e5sen\u2019s summer farm. More than 10,000 people gathered for the dedication of the statue. A company and Prince Gustaf (later Gustaf V) unveiled the statue.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-de.cloud-object-storage.appdomain.cloud\/vasaloppet-costest-static-web-hosting-myg\/2025\/11\/historia-start-och-mal-gustav_vasa_2023_1350x690-1062x543-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1627\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gustav Vasa statue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The Vasal\u00f6paren statue<\/strong><br>On June 23, 1974 the \u201dVasal\u00f6paren\u201d statue was unveiled in the municipal house park in Mora.
