Ski
Membership in ski club
Participants in Vasaloppet must be members of a Swedish ski club registered with the Swedish Ski Association. International participants do not need to be members of any club; they automatically represent their country.
Ban on fluorinated ski wax
VSki wax and top-coating products that contain fluorine are prohibited in all our ski races starting from 2024. Their use can result in a starting ban or disqualification. Read more on the Swedish Ski Association’s website. Swedish Ski Association’s website.
Time penalty for littering in the Vasaloppet Arena
It is allowed to throw garbage in three different ways during Vasaloppet’s Winter Week. If you will be caught by throwing debris otherwise you may be penalized with a time penalty of 15 minutes.
You must throw litter:
- in the bins at the Vasaloppet checkpoints.
- in the marked littering zones between each Vasaloppet checkpoint.
- where you as a participant know that a team leader or associate will pick up what you throw.
False pretences
A competitor will automatically be disqualified if he/she participates in the competition under false pretences such as starting under false name/with false timing chip or practice any unsportsmanlike behaviour. The Race Director and/or Race Secretary have authority to disqualify, penalize or ban from participation if evidence of rule infraction is submitted after the race is completed and after the Jury has finished their work.
Bike
The races are sanctioned by Svenska Cykelförbundet (SCF, the Swedish Cycling Federation), and run in accordance with SCF’s regulations TR 1, TR 4 and TR 12. Read the rules in their entirety at SCF’s website.
In competition class, violation of rule 1.3.008 in TR 1 leads to disqualification.
Membership in cycling club
Swedish participants in the competition class need to be members of a cycling club and must have a competition license. For purchasing your license, please visit the Swedish cykling federation’s website, scf.se.
International participants do not need to be members of any club; they automatically represent their country. Even non-Swedish participants need to have a license that can be purchased on the Swedish cykling federation’s website.
Equipment
It is mandatory to wear an approved cycling helmet. The helmet must be worn throughout the entire race, as well as when cycling in the start area and between the finish area and the shower facilities.
Due to the risk of injury we do not allow cycling with:
- earphones, for example with music
- bottles that are not suited for the bottle holder
- tow bike, electric bike, unicycle, child seat or bike trailer
- bike with drop handlebars in the competition class
- tandem bike in the competition class and the first groups of the leisure class.
Tandem bikes are allowed in the leisure class from start group 12 and up. Bikes with drop handlebars are allowed in leisure class.
Traffic
Swedish traffic regulations apply whenever there is other traffic.

The competition is organized in accordance with the Swedish Athletics Association’s regulations.

All participation in Vasaloppet’s events is at one’s own risk. Vasaloppet takes no responsibility for loss or damage to your belongings and property.
In the event of accidents
In the event of an accident, file a claim with Folksam.
- If you have taken out the insurance Folksam Motionsloppsförsäkring Bas or Folksam Motionsloppsförsäkring Stor, costs due to accidents will primarily be reimbursed by this insurance. Read more about the insurances further down.
- If you’re a member of a sports club connected to the Swedish Sports Confederation, and you’re registered in the club’s name, you will secondarily be reimbursed by the sports club’s insurance.
- If you’ve not taken out Folksam Motionsloppsförsäkring Bas or Folksam Motionsloppsförsäkring Stor, and you are not a registered member of a sports club connected to the Swedish Sports Confederation, Vasaloppet’s accident insurance may be applicable.
In the event of loss or damage to your belongings
- Vasaloppet does not cover loss or damage to your possessions.
- Loss or damage should be reported to your insurance company and your home insurance. Regarding equipment with high value we recommend taking out a comprehensive or separate insurance.
