More even surface on the start hill ensures fairer conditions
Work is now underway to create more evenly matched tracks on the first hill for participants in Cykelvasan 90 and Cykelvasan Öppet Spår. In addition, the bridge at the road crossing has been widened.
The goal of these improvements is to make overtaking easier during the first few kilometres – a change that elite cyclists in particular have requested.
– In the elite group, the pace is high from the very start, and an ideal line often forms that’s faster than the others, explains Daniel Mäkinen, Event Lead at Vasaloppet.
– What we’re doing now is leveling the surface from the road crossing all the way up to the highest point. The plan is to have two to three equally good tracks up the entire hill, so that more cyclists have a chance to stay in the game if – or when – the lead group pulls away.
