Vasaloppet 2017, with 15,800 registered skiers, was concluded with a tight and thrilling sprint in the men's class where last year's winner, Norwegian John Kristian Dahl, managed to defend his victory just ahead of fellow countryman Andreas Nygaard. This despite major back problems in the days before the start. Britta Johansson Norgren won a long-awaited victory in the ladies' class after placing second these past three years.
The 93rd Vasaloppet since the beginning in 1922 will start in Berga by in Sälen on Sunday March 5, 2017, at 08:00. This year marks the centennial of the birth of Nils ”Mora-Nisse” Karlsson, who won Vasaloppet more than anyone else, and Vasaloppet is asking everyone to ski the race with a red cap to honour this skiing hero. As usual Vasaloppet has collected and compiled many interesting historic facts, statistics and trivia, as well as current news for the race on Sunday.
Britta Johansson Norgren won the 29th Tjejvasan with a new record time: 1.16.44. Britta broke the earlier record by a minute and 46 seconds. In brilliant sunshine and hard, solid tracks, Britta shot off at full speed right from the start. After Hökberg she was skiing solo towards her victory and the new record. "This was amazing. An incredible experience," said Britta after her second straight victory in Tjejvasan.
Vasaloppet's CEO Eva-Lena Frick writes to welcome all visitors to Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2017.
Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2017 starts on Friday, February 24, with Kortvasan. So far, participants from 58 different nations, from all continents, have registered for Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2017. The earlier record of 55 nations was from 2016.
It is now high time to register for Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2017. Over 63,000 are already registered but there are still plenty of places left for those who want to ski in a race (or several). You can register online at vasaloppet.se up until Tuesday, February 21, at midnight. We then open for direct registration (with slightly higher participation fee) and changes made on location at our competition offices on Wednesday, February 22, in Mora at 16:00 and in Sälen on Thursday, February 23, at 10:00. Start certificates will be emailed on Thursday, February 16, to those of you who are already registered.
This morning, the final start place was booked in Öppet Spår Sunday, making for a total of 10,000 registered participants. This is the fifth year in a row that the race is fully booked, and the third race of the Winter Week 2017 to fill up. Both Vasaloppet and Nattvasan have already been fully booked.
This year marks 100 years since Nils ”Mora-Nisse” Karlsson (1917-2012) was born. And of course we are celebrating. We now ask all participants starting in the 93rd Vasaloppet on Sunday, March 5, to do so wearing a red cap. The goal is to make a gigantic tribute to an athletic star and Vasaloppet's greatest icon through the ages.
Are you eager to try cross-country skiing for the first time? Then Blåbärsloppet on Saturday, March 4, is perfect for you. This race is less about competition and more about daring to try. Welcome with your registration!
