Rules for our ski races
Vasaloppet’s ski races are sanctioned by the Swedish Ski Association and conducted in accordance with the association’s rules and guidelines.
The Swedish Ski Association’s rules and guidelines.
Membership in ski club
Participants in Vasaloppet’s and Tjejvasan’s competition class must be members of a Swedish ski club registered with the Swedish Ski Association. Participants in other ski races do not need to be members of a ski club. International participants also do not need to be members of any club; they automatically represent their country.
Ban on fluorinated ski wax
VSki wax and top-coating products that contain fluorine are prohibited in all our ski races starting from 2024. Their use can result in a starting ban or disqualification. Read more on the Swedish Ski Association’s website. Swedish Ski Association’s website.
Ski technique
Classic style ski races
Vasaloppet 30, Tjejvasan, Öppet Spår Sunday, Ungdomsvasan, Vasaloppet 45, Stafettvasan, and Vasaloppet all use classic ski technique.
Single or double skating is not allowed. Changing direction allows stepping with the inside ski and pushing off with the outside ski with the intent of changing direction. When there are prepared tracks, repeated track changes or stepping in and out of the track are not permitted. The use of skate technique may lead to disqualification.
In Vasaloppet and the Tjejvasan competition class, FIS rules and the decisions of the race jury apply. However, skiers who are not elite competitors may also be given verbal warnings directly on the course, and after several such warnings in the same race, the jury may decide on a penalty that can lead to disqualification.
Freestyle ski races
Öppet Spår Monday 30, Öppet Spår Monday 45, Öppet Spår Monday 90, Nattvasan 30, Nattvasan 45, Nattvasan 90 and Vasaloppet 10 are freestyle races, meaning that classic skiing and skate are both allowed.
Time penalty for littering in the Vasaloppet Arena
It is allowed to throw garbage in three different ways during Vasaloppet’s Winter Week. If you will be caught by throwing debris otherwise you may be penalized with a time penalty of 15 minutes.
You must throw litter:
- in the bins at the Vasaloppet checkpoints.
- in the marked littering zones between each Vasaloppet checkpoint.
- where you as a participant know that a team leader or associate will pick up what you throw.
False pretences
A competitor will automatically be disqualified if he/she participates in the competition under false pretences such as starting under false name/with false timing chip or practice any unsportsmanlike behaviour. The Race Director and/or Race Secretary have authority to disqualify, penalize or ban from participation if evidence of rule infraction is submitted after the race is completed and after the Jury has finished their work.
