Art by Roger Metto featured on this summer's diploma
The artist behind the 2025 Vasaloppet motif, a snow-laden spruce, is Roger Metto. His winter-themed artwork appears on this year’s poster and on the diploma awarded to skiers. Roger Metto also created the piece that will feature on diplomas for cyclists and runners this summer. The work is titled “Mellan loppen” ("Between the races") and it offers a characteristic view from the Vasaloppet Arena.
Roger Metto is best known and appreciated for his vibrant landscape paintings. He grew up at the foot of Luossavaara in Kiruna and has spent long periods in the mountain regions, which is often reflected in his work.
“I enjoy hiking through new areas and stopping to gather impressions. I also take a lot of photos and use those images back in my studio. The blurrier they are, the better they work for my painting,” he says.
The basis for Roger’s Vasaloppet summer oil painting is a photo he took last autumn.
“I wanted to depict a geographical location in the Vasaloppet Arena that participants can recognize, which is why I chose Gopshus. Many people are probably too focused on the trail or the course ahead of them, but some may remember this distinctive view.”
He chose the title “Between the races” to highlight contrasts:
“When the races are on, there’s a lot of activity in nature – but in between, there are many months of calm and stillness.”
