New route for Cykelvasan 90 – more Vasaloppet feeling and 3 km shorter

1 June 2026

Participants in Cykelvasan 90 and Cykelvasan Öppet Spår will now get even more Vasaloppet feeling in their race. More than 7 kilometres of the course will be moved from asphalt and gravel roads into the classic winter Vasaloppet trail. The total distance will now be 92 kilometres instead of 95 kilometres.

The new course layout for this summer is the biggest change to the Nordic region’s biggest mountain bike race since 2023. That was when the first part of the race moved onto the climb where all 90-kilometre races for skiers, cyclists and runners now start. For Cykelvasan, this work is part of a multi-year plan to create the best possible experience for participants.

Around 40 kilometres of Cykelvasan ran on asphalt when the race launched in 2009, but now that number is down to 3 km – running through the villages Evertsberg and Gopshus, and the finishing straight into Mora.
“Over the years, we have systematically moved the race further into the Vasaloppet Arena while reducing asphalt sections. We are now taking the next steps in the plan to create an even more varied and nature-based cycling experience. Work is progressing at full speed and it’s exciting to be able to implement these changes for this summer’s races,” says Daniel Mäkinen, Events Director at Vasaloppet.

The revised course for Cykelvasan 2026 mainly concerns two areas. Between Tennäng (around 4 kilometres after Mångsbodarna) and Risberg, a section of approximately 2 kilometres will be rerouted onto the same route as the ski trail. And between Risberg and Evertsberg, around 5 kilometres will be moved from gravel roads and asphalt directly into the Vasaloppet trail. These changes also shorten the total course for Cykelvasan 90 and Cykelvasan Öppet Spår from 95 kilometres to 92 kilometres.
“It will provide a more enjoyable and scenic ride for participants and we believe the Vasaloppet feeling will become even stronger as larger parts of the race take place on the Vasaloppet trail itself. These changes also remove a section through a gravel pit just before Evertsberg, which many participants have found challenging,” says Daniel Mäkinen.

At present, 12,000 participants are registered to take part in Cykelvasan in the Vasaloppet Arena on Friday and Saturday, August 7–8.
