One Vasaloppet is not enough – 70 percent increase for Vasaloppstrippeln
Completing a Vasaloppet race is an achievement in itself. But for 277 registrants, so far, it's not enough. They're aiming to complete three Vasaloppet races in one calendar year by skiing, cycling and running 90 or 45 km in forefathers' tracks in 2019.
Some call them mad. Others say anyone could do it if they put their mind to it. These past years have seen all sorts, from training nerds, ”regular” grandmothers, people previously opposed to exercise and stressed parents cross the finish line to complete Vasaloppstrippeln 90 or Vasaloppstrippeln 45; three Vasaloppet all in the same year.
Interest in Vasaloppstrippeln 90, which could first be completed in 2014 when Ultravasan ran for the first time, has grown significantly over the years. When registration opened for Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2019 last year it was possible to register directly for Vasaloppstrippeln 90 and Vasaloppstrippeln 45. (Previously it had only been possible to register for one race at a time.)
Setting an early and challenging training goal seems popular. Already 169 participants have registered to attempt three 90 km Vasaloppet during 2019; on skis in Vasaloppet or Öppet Spår Sunday/Öppet Spår Monday, on bike in Cykelvasan 90 or Cykelvasan Öppet Spår and on foot in Ultravasan 90. It’s an increase of about 70 percent compared to the same time last year.
At the same time 108 participants are now ready to take on Vasaloppstrippeln 45 in Halvvasan, Cykelvasan 45 and Ultravasan 45. A new challenge that 39 people completed in its first year, 2018.
The reward for those who manage it is, apart from fame and glory, a nice-looking – and rare – t-shirt that proves you have completed Vasaloppstrippeln. Something to look forward to as this year’s ”triple athletes” cross the finish line in Mora after Ultravasan 90 and Ultravasan 45 on Sunday, August 17.
But first on the agenda is skiing in Vasaloppet’s Winter Week. And for those who feel inspired after completing a ski race it is, of course, possible to then register separately for the summer races to complete Vasaloppstrippeln 90 or Vasaloppstrippeln 45 as early as this year!
