Öppet Spår Sunday 2026 fully booked today

Winter has arrived in earnest, and with exactly six weeks until Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2026, Öppet Spår Sunday has become the first race to sell out. At present, there are still start positions available for all other races, but forecasts indicate that both Vasaloppet and Tjejvasan are likely to fill up.

Snowfall and weather warnings follow one another across the country, and many people are urged to take extra care on the roads. The long-awaited winter is bringing reports of skiing from both southern parts of the country and major metropolitan areas. So far, more than 53,000 participants have registered for one of the 14 races during Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2026; an increase of over 10 percent compared with last year.
“The feeling of winter is truly here – and it shows in our participant lists. It will be great to welcome both new and experienced skiers to the Vasaloppet Arena,” says Johan Eriksson, CEO of Vasaloppet.

Since its premiere in 1979, nearly 390,000 participants have completed the Öppet Spår races (90 km). Now, Öppet Spår Sunday 2026 is fully booked with 10,000 registered participants.
“Already when registration opened last winter, we saw that entries for Öppet Spår Sunday were very strong, and that has continued through the autumn and into winter. It is encouraging to see so many people wanting to ski long-distance races and appreciating Öppet Spår Sunday’s friendly atmosphere,” says Johan Eriksson.

This is the first time that Öppet Spår Sunday has sold out before Vasaloppet, which still has start positions available. Forecasts suggest that both Vasaloppet and Tjejvasan will also fill up, but for now it is still possible to register for these races.
“Most often, Vasaloppet – with its international appeal, prestige, competitive intensity, and live television broadcasts both nationally and globally – is the first to fill up, with our other races following afterward. So this is an interesting scenario. The maximum number of participants in Vasaloppet is 15,800, and there are currently still start places available,” says Johan Eriksson.

Stafettvasan, the world’s biggest cross-country ski relay, and Tjejvasan, the world’s biggest cross-country ski race exclusively for women, are also seeing strong interest this year. Despite a weak start to winter in the southern half of the country, interest in skiing a race in the Vasaloppet Arena is higher than it has been for a long time, and now that winter has arrived nationwide, that interest is growing even further.
“It’s fantastic that so many people are motivated to ski a race, and they now have the opportunity to train and prepare at home. Here in the Vasaloppet Arena, we’ve been working flat out to manage all the snowfall and prepare the ski tracks, and we now have very good skiing conditions across almost the entire arena,” says Johan Eriksson.

To date, 387,844 finishes have been recorded in Öppet Spår since its premiere in 1979.
Originally, Öppet Spår was held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
In 1995, Öppet Spår added an additional day: Sunday.
Since 2000, Öppet Spår has been held on Sundays and Mondays.
In 2013, Öppet Spår Sunday sold out for the first time with 10,000 registered participants. The race has now sold out a total of seven times.
