Preparing for the 35th Tjejvasan on Saturday, February 25, 2023

Note: You can register on location at the race offices in Mora and Sälen starting Thursday, February 23 at 12:00. Registration can also be completed at the race office at the start point in Oxberg on Saturday.

Elites
About ten percent of participants ski in the competition classes while the rest are in the exercise class. The top 30 in Tjejvasan 2022 will have the same start number in Tjejvasan 2023 as their 2022 placement.

Since several of the winners of recent years have retired – such as Britta Johansson Norgren, Lina Korsgren and Laila Kveli – this year should see a new winner bringing home the victory wreath and the check for 50,000 SEK.

Right now, 15 of the top 25 in in this year’s Ski Classics are also registered for Tjejvasan 2023. Anna Jönsson Haag (20th) is also participating, but as a skiing reporter for SVT.

Each season, every Ski Classics skier can count their best result from the Challengers series. Winning a Challenger race – such as Tjejvasan – is worth 50 points (compared to 200 points in a regular Ski Classics race and 300 points in Vasaloppet). Results also affect rankings, which determine starting positions at the Pro Tour races.

Note that both Magni Smedås, in first place, and Ida Dahl, in second place, have already secured their 50 points in a Challenger race, as they won roller ski races this past summer. Third place Emilie Fleten is the only one in the Ski Classics Champion top ten who hasn’t yet participated in a Challenger race. The Tjejvasan placement is therefore a little extra important for Fleten.

Some other favourites: Linn Sömskar has been third and fifth in Tjejvasan these past two years. Jenny Larsson was fifth in both 2020 and 2021. Karolina Hedenström is fifth in Ski Classics Champion. Moa Lundgren and Märta Rosenberg are also registered.

As of Thursday, around 60 participants were registered for the new junior competition class (D17-20), which was introduced in 2022. Last year’s winner Alba Björnsdotter is a junior this year too.

Prizes in the senior class
Individual prizes in the form of training scholarships totalling 134,000 SEK (including sprint prizes) are awarded. The winner receives 50,000 SEK. The top 6 are all awarded prizes.
Hökberg sprint prize: 5,000 SEK. Eldris sprint prize: 5,000 SEK.
Placement medals – gold, silver and bronze – are awarded to those who place first, second and third. All participants who reach the finish line will receive a medal.

Record bonus
If a skier sets a new record time in Tjejvasan they will receive a 50,000 SEK record bonus. The current Tjejvasan record is from 2022 when Britta Johansson Norgren completed the race in 1.15.39.2, beating her own record time of 1.16.44 from 2017 by one minute and five seconds. Britta’s time to Hökberg in 2022 was 28.36 min and Eldris 53.56 min.

Junior class
Since 2022, there is a junior class (17–20 years) in Tjejvasan. This means that there are now two competition classes (senior and junior), as well as the regular exercise class where you can participate from the year you turn 17.

Tjejvasan’s competition classes, including start groups Elite, 1A, 1B and 2, start at 09:00. After that, one group starts every 15 minutes. Individual prizes in the form of training scholarships are also awarded in the junior class, totalling 22,000 SEK to the top six participants. The junior class winner receives 10,000 SEK. Sprint prizes are only awarded in the senior class.

Should a junior competitor cross the finish line first of all, she would of course fully win Tjejvasan, receiving the victory wreath and 50,000 SEK, but it is not possible to win the prize money from both classes.

Kransmas
This year’s Kransmas, the 35th, is Albin Gezelius, active within IFK Mora.

The Kransmas honorary award
When Tjejvasan celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018, a new tradition was introduced where all Kransmas through the years join together to raise money for a woven pillow from Mora Hemslöjd, embroidered with ”Kransmasarnas hederspris Tjejvasan 2023” (The Kransmas honorary award Tjejvasan 2023). The pillow is awarded to the Tjejvasan victor.

In 1998, Bente Martinsen won 4 minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Emelie Öhrstig. The second longest winning margin is from 2017 when Britta Johansson Norgren set a new record time and won 2 minutes and 34 seconds ahead of Emilia Lindstedt.

Sprint finishes in Tjejvasan
Those placed first and second have been within one second of each other in 16 of the 34 Tjejvasan races. (In 2009 the top seven women crossed the finish line within three seconds.) Notably, 15 of the 18 latests races have been settled via sprints on the finishing stretch.
