Presenting the Jubileumsvasan participants

Vasaloppet is today publishing short introductions to each of the 139 Jubileumsvasan participants who will be an important part of Vasaloppet's 100-year history! Starting in Jubileumsvasan on Saturday, February 12, are, for example, five Vasaloppet winners, a Kranskulla, two Kransmas, an Italian baker, a firefighter, a professor working at CERN in Switzerland, a member of the Riksdag, an infection control doctor, a forest ranger, a coast guard, a secondary school teacher, a priest... Just like in regular Vasaloppet, the start list is a real cross-section of society.

A look at the list reveals Vasaloppet connections both from the past and present:

Two brothers will participate in Jubileumsvasan: Jakob and Mattias Alm, whose grandfather Ernst won the first Vasaloppet in 1922. Two sisters are also participating: Anne and Jennie Mörk, daughters of Inge Mörk who came second in Vasaloppet 1982.

Five participants have won Vasaloppet: Henrik Eriksson, Staffan Larsson, Sofia Lind, Oskar Svärd and Daniel Tynell. A former Kranskulla, Eva Lif, and two former Kransmas, Staffan Larsson and Markus Leijon, are also on the list.

Five have participated in the Olympics: Anna-Lena Fritzson, Mathias Fredriksson, John Harrysson (in sailing), Karin Lamberg, Anders Södergren (Olympic gold 2010).

Note that there are two Martin Eriksson, both the same age. One is from Transtrand and the other from Vallentuna.

Three participants, all women, were born in the 2000s. The youngest is Emma Löfqvist, 19 years old. The oldest participant is Erik O. Sjödin, 76 years old.

Six Vasaloppet veterans, who have skied at least 30 races each in forefathers’ tracks, are registered. They are Martin ”Transtrand” Eriksson, Birger Fält, Patrik Qvicker, Anders Sörensson, Helen Östensson and Margareta Östensson-Lindblom. One participant will become a Vasaloppet veteran if he finishes Jubileumsvasan: Hans Gerremo.

Three Australians (!) are participating: Julian Dabbs, Simon Evans and Andrew Becker.

In total, the participants have started 2,113 Vasaloppet races over the years, 918 of which are the main Vasaloppet race.

Some are even intending to ski to the  Jubileumsvasan start, such as Emma Alenius who plans to get to the race by ski and train.
”I will travel by train from Hudiksvall to Mora on Wednesday, February 8,” Emma Alenius explains. ”Then I’ll ski the Vasaloppet track ‘backwards’ with modern equipment and spend the night in Evertsberg. On Thursday I’ll ski on to Sälen and on Friday I’ll rest before the race on Saturday. I do this to honour the first Vasaloppet skiers from Norsjö who travelled several miles by ski and train to get to the competition.”
