Ski Classics Pro Tour Season XV – 2023/2024
The Season XV of Ski Classics Pro Tour consists of 15 events on 11 event weekends in 6 different countries. Vasaloppet on Sunday, March 3, is the eleventh stage and third Grand Classics event of Season XV, the 2024 edition of the renowned 90-kilometer classic race holds a special significance – celebrating the event’s 100th edition.
The 90-kilometer race held on the first Sunday of March has earned its place as the oldest and most prestigious event within the Ski Classics circuit. For Pro Team athletes, securing victory in this gruelling long-distance mass start race is the ultimate dream.
“Iconic Vasaloppet is celebrating its 100th edition, and we are sure it will be a true Folkfest. The most prestigious of all events, according to most athletes, and we already long for it!” says Ski Classics Sport Director Anton Karlsson.
Importance and Traditions
Beyond its athletic prowess, Vasaloppet has transcended its status as a mere ski race to become a global sporting phenomenon. With its rich history and cherished traditions, the brand has evolved into an institution encompassing various events and activities throughout the annual summer and winter weeks.
Since its establishment in 1922, over 1.7 million participants have triumphantly crossed the iconic finish line portal of Vasaloppet’s different races. This race’s roots trace even further to the year 1520 when the saga of Gustav Eriksson Vasa unfolded. His rebellion against Denmark culminated in his ascent to becoming the first King of free Sweden – a tale that the event celebrates.
Starting in Berga by, nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Sälen and renowned for its acclaimed alpine ski resorts, Vasaloppet’s course winds its way to the world-famous town of Mora, the celebrated finish location. The event’s influence and significance extend far beyond Sweden’s borders, as participants from around the globe gather each season to immerse themselves in the spirit of long-distance skiing.
Throughout the years, Vasaloppet and Ski Classics have forged a fruitful partnership, fostering mutual growth and development. Together, they have preserved and revitalized a century’s worth of traditions and cultural heritage since 1922, ensuring this timeless event thrives in a modern era.
The 100th Vasaloppet is already fully booked, but in 2024 there are a record number of other ski races to register for in the Vasaloppet’s Winter Week.
The 36th Tjejvasan, which will be held on Saturday 24 February 2024, is a Ski Classics Challenger event, just like in 2023.
