Stafettvasan 2018 is fully booked and bigger than ever
12,000 skiers are now registered for Stafettvasan on Friday, March 2, 2018, making it the world's largest skiing relay race, and the third biggest race in Vasaloppet's Winter Week. Only Vasaloppet and Öppet Spår are bigger. Once again Stafettvasan has teams registered from all 21 Swedish counties this year.
Anything is possible in relay racing! Sweden is the nation that has won most Olympic golds in skiing relay 4 x 10 km on the men’s side, six in total, and in Pyeongchang the Swedes have a shot at being first to win three Olympic relays in a row. The Swedish ladies are also reigning Olympic champions since 2014.
But with all due respect for the Olympics… While the national team captain is considering how to compose the Olympic relay team, there are 2,400 other team captains considering the composition of their own teams, and of the largest skiing relay race in the world, Stafettvasan! Sports clubs, organizations, teams of friends, companies, public agencies, municipalities and other work places; everywhere is talk of who will ski which section this winter.
This Wednesday Stafettvasan was fully booked when the maximum number of 2,400 registered teams was reached. Five participants in each team makes for a total of 12,000 skiers.
Stafettvasan, which started in 2003, has grown so popular in recent years that it now has two start times in Sälen; 1,200 teams start at 07:00 and 1,200 teams start at 09:00.
Participants in Stafettvasan 2018 come from 18 different nations. All 21 Swedish counties have teams registered for Stafettvasan, and the five biggest this year are Västra Götaland, Stockholm, Dalarna, Uppsala and Gävleborg.
So far over 56,000 participants are registered for Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2018. In addition to Stafettvasan, Vasaloppet and Nattvasan have already been fully booked. There are start places available in all other races. (Registration for our beginners’ race Blåbärsloppet does not open until Sunday, January 21 on vasaloppet.se.)
The five Stafettvasan sections:
1. Sälen – Mångsbodarna 24 km
2. Mångsbodarna – Evertsberg 24 km
3. Evertsberg – Oxberg 14 km
4. Oxberg – Hökberg 9 km
