Vasaloppet adopts zero tolerance against littering on the track
For a few years Vasaloppet has worked with "litter zones" along the track. These will now, for Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2015, be taken away and replaced by a zero tolerance policy against littering on the track! Throwing litter will be permitted at the starts, the finish and in designated places at the seven checkpoints. In all other places, zero tolerance will apply.
By this, Vasaloppet wants to convey that Vasalopps Arena should be safe and free from trash. Participants should always feel that it is wrong to throw something in nature, even if it is during a race. The Right of Public Access applies to Vasalopps Arena and all littering in nature is prohibited under the Environmental Code.
Littering is a problem, both as a result of the increased number of participants and because many bring extra energy products with disposable packaging. For Vasaloppet’s Summer Week 2011 special ”litter zones” were introduced where litter could be tossed, but these will now be taken away as Vasaloppet goes a step further.
The Vasaloppet track has been a nature reserve since 1994.
FACTS/ The Vasaloppet Nature Reserve
The Dalarna County Administration formed the reserve in 1994 to ”ensure future victories”. Along the trail there are eight summer grazing farms, three villages, and marshes and woodlands. The nature reserve is 90 kilometres long and 84 hectare (208 acres). It’s been called ”The world’s narrowest nature reserve”. The reserve starts in Berga by right outside Sälen. It winds through Älvdalen municipality and ends in central Mora.
